Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
