Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
