Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
