Master Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
