Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
