Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
