Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
