Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
