Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
