Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
