Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
