Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
