Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
