Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
