Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
