Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
