Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
