Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
