Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
