Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
