Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
