Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
