Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
