Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
