Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
