Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
