Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
