Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win.
