Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps.
